TREATY OF GHENT!!!

The Treaty of Ghent

Don’t you think that after you have a war and sign a treaty, that the treaty should cover some of the reasons why you had the war? The Treaty of Ghent was signed after the War of 1812, which was a war between England and the U.S. The War of 1812 started because England was attacking American ships and impressing American soldiers. The U.S. already had a treaty with England, Jay’s Treaty, which England failed to follow. James Madison, the current president, thought there was no other way to stop England besides war. When England heard that the U.S. was planning on going to war with them, they said they would stop attacking American ships, but the news reached Madison too late and by then the war had begun.

Neither of the two sides won the war. They both got tired of fighting so they agreed to sign a treaty on December 24, 1814. They named the treaty The Treaty of Ghent, since it was written in Ghent, Belgium. The treaty covered many topics, but contained nothing about attacking American ships and impressing soldiers. The treaty did, however, make England surrender all of America’s captured soldiers. They also agreed to return 10,000,000 acres of land to the U.S. In return for all of the captured soldiers the U.S. had to give England £250,000. The treaty also set up simple boundaries which helped avoid interaction between English and American ships.

The Treaty benefited both the U.S. and England in many ways. The U.S. gained back all of their imprisoned soldiers, they gained more security and safety at sea, they gained power and more respect, and also got support from both France and from Napoleon, who were also against England. The treaty didn’t benefit England as much as the U.S. but it did give them £250,000 just for freeing captured American soldiers. The treaty also left them fighting only one war, which was with France.

The Treaty of Ghent gave some disadvantages to both countries as well. Some of the worse things that came from the treaty were: the U.S. split into even more groups because some agreed and some disagreed with the war or with the treaty with England. The war got rid of their small but strong government because it made the U.S. look more aggressive and more threatening. It also led to the loss of the goods the U.S. usually got from England. The treaty made England seem inferior to the U.S., it also made England fear the U.S. more since Napoleon and France joined them. England had not followed the terms of Jay’s Treaty, but they did follow the terms of The Treaty of Ghent.

The Treaty of Ghent was signed after the War of 1812, which was fought between England and the U.S. The war started because England was attacking American ships. The treaty of Ghent was signed December 24, 1814, and it made England return all of their imprisoned American soldiers in exchange for £250,000. It also marked simple boundaries so that England’s ships and American ships wouldn’t interact. The treaty did not, however, mention impressing or attacking American ships. Both countries followed the rules of the treaty, and never went to war for the same reasons ever again.
