I thought I'd put up a list of books that Catholics might find useful, to help put the current crisis in The Church in some perspective, to get some handle on various other and on-going controversies, and just generally to read up on Church teaching as well.

On the Crisis in The Church:

Romano Amerio, Iota Unum, trans. Fr. Parsons, Sarto House, 1997, ISBN#0-9639032-1-7, 786 pgs, ppk:   A study of the unwarranted changes made early on in setting up Vatican II, of the problems as it was held, and on some of the teachings which were falsely promulgated in the name of Vatican II, from a well respected professor who was himself a periti at the council. A detailed historical account.
Mgr. Klaus Gamber, The Reform of the Roman Liturgy, trans. Klaus Grimm, Una Voce Press, 1993, ISBN#0-912141-05-0, 198 pgs, ppk:   Study of the new liturgy, the Novus Ordo, with comments on facing the congregation, the Pope's limits in changing The Mass, comparison of The Latin Mass with Novus Ordo, and a consideration of the consecration, itself, in the Novus Ordo - and more.
Ralph M. Wiltgen, The Rhine Flows into the Tiber, TAN, 1967, ppk:   Have not read, myself, but is apparently another examination of the problems with Vatican II, histories of some of the main characters involved, and so on, emphasizing the role of the unorthodox German bishops.
Mgr. Michael Wrenn, Catechisms and Controversies, Ignatius Press, 1991, ISBN#0-089870-371-9, 237 pgs, ppk:   Study of systematic problems in catechesis, and the relatively new RCIA programs, not to mention CCD, from the 70s through the 1980s. Predates the new catechism.
Anne Roche-Muggeridge, The Desolate City, HarperCollins, 1990, ISBN#0-06-066046-5, 265 pgs, ppk (out of print):   On the general crisis in The Church, tracing the history back before Vatican II, and following it up to the present. [Try here for new old stock]
Dietrich von Hildebrand, Trojan Horse in the City of God, Sophia Institute, 1993, ISBN#0-918477-18-2, 303 pgs, hb:   Reprint of this influential book from the late 1960s, less a history than a general and scholarly criticism of the ideas embodied in the 'spirit of Vatican II', and elsewhere, from the highly respected philosopher.
Dietrich von Hildebrand, The Charitable Anathema, Roman Catholic Books, 1993, ISBN#0-912141-07-7, 205 pgs, hb:   A collection of essays, some from late in his life, as his opposition to the Novus Ordo and various other changes in The Church became even sharper. Contains, among all the interesting essays, one called - The Case for the Latin Mass.
James Demers, The Last Roman Catholic?, Creative Bound, 1992, ISBN#0-921165-17-X, 198 pgs, ppk (out of print):   Rather heart-rending tale of the betrayal of Canadian Catholics by their own national hierarchy just carrying out the 'spirit of Vatican II'. [Try here for new old stock]
Michael Davies, Mass Facing the People, Neumann Press, 1991, ISBN#0-911845-25-9, 43 pgs, ppk:   Monograph on various abuses wrought in the Novus Ordo, as well as on turning the altar about, and includes reference to the infamous quote from the 'reformer', Gelineau, about The Mass as we knew it being destroyed.

Fr. James Meagher, How Christ Said the First Mass, TAN, 1984, ISBN#0-89555-207-8, 438 pgs, ppk:   Father Meagher's exploration and speculation on the details and the ceremonies of Christ's institution of The Eucharist at The Last Supper.
Joseph Jungmann, Mass of the Roman Rite, TAN, ISBN#0-87061-129-1, 2 vol., ppk:   Considered something of a standard reference on the history and development of The Mass.
Abbe Francois Amiot, History of The Mass, Hawthorne Books, 1959, 140 pgs, hb (out of print, try BX2230.A533):   One the 20th Century Encyclopedia of Catholicism volumes, giving a quick overview of developments in and origins for parts of The Holy Mass down through the centuries.
Fr. Michael Mueller, The Holy Sacrifice of The Mass, TAN, 1992, ISBN#0-89555-437-2, 600 pgs, ppk:   Detailed considerations underlying all parts of The Mass, their origins, their purpose, even why Churches are built, or used to be, in a certain way.
St. Leonard, The Hidden Treasure, TAN, ISBN#0-89555-036-9, 124 pgs, ppk:   Very inspiring little book, likely one of TAN's most popular, even to what to wear to Mass and why, how to pay attention, what to pray, what to think about, including an entire chapter of prayers and devotions, and much more.
Fr. Paul O'Sullivan, The Wonders of The Mass, TAN, ISBN#0-89555-491-7, 40 pgs, ppk:   An interesting little booklet on The Mass, the Real Presence, quotes from the Saints on their devotion, and various Eucharistic miracles.
Fr. Michael Mueller, The Blessed Eucharist, TAN, ISBN#0-89555-040-7, 360 pgs, ppk:   A history of various Eucharistic miracles, a call to devotion with regard to The Mass, explanations and meditations on the whole, and on parts.
Cardinal Manning, The Blessed Sacrament, Neumann Press, 32 pgs, ppk:   Short essay on The Eucharist, its meaning, and the Sacraments in general, with introduction by a Francis Conklin.
Frs. Fortescue and O'Connell, Ceremonies of the Roman Rite, Saint Austin Press, ISBN#1-9011-57-00-2, 1996 reprint of 1962 12th ed., 423 pgs, hb:   Pretty much a step by step explanation of the low and high Mass, the actions of priest and server, and includes the same detailed description of the Sacraments, vespers, changes during the liturgical year; perhaps only some of the works cited at the beginning of the book are more detailed than this.

St. Alphonsus de Liquori, The Glories of Mary, Catholic Book, 1996, ISBN#0-87942-360-4, 700 pgs, ppk (repr. by TAN):   Not only profound meditations on the life of Mary, and on the Mysteries, but prayers, devotions, novenas, and remarks on Mary as Mediatrix of all graces, along with much else.
St. Louis de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, Montfort Pub., 1987, ISBN#0-910984-50-6, 185 pgs, ppk:   Inspirational and influential little book describing all aspects of devotion to Our Blessed Mother, and that is clear and pulls no punches in regard to our devotion to her.
Mgr. Charles Dollen, My Rosary, Alba House, 1988, ISBN#0-8189-0529-8, 204 pgs, hb (out of print):   Fairly good selection of quotes from Church fathers, Saints, various sources by way of meditations for each of the 15 Mysteries of The Holy Rosary.
Frs. Callan and McHugh, Our Lady's Rosary, P.J. Kenedy & Sons:NY, 1939, 264 pgs, ppk (out of print):   Another selection of meditations, elaboration and history surrounding the various Mysteries, and more.
