Yvette's About Me and My Iris Page
Iris Addicts Welcome Here
I used to collect alot of things but right now and for the last 16 years, I collect Iris, all sizes, colors, types, etc. The main reason I started was because they are deer and gopher resistant!! Not proof. They are also drought tolerant, when you have property, that's a plus. I belong to many iris groups. Some include the American Iris Society, Reblooming Iris Society, Historic Iris Society, Species, Pacific Coast Native (photo of PCN seedlings of mine),Median Iris Society, and I also belong to 2 local Iris Societies, they are the Sacramento and the Sierra Foothills Iris Societies. I encourage anyone interested in any of these iris types to join one or more of them, as their bulletins contain much information. You can start by clicking on the AIS link on this page and look around at what's available.
A Few Facts About Iris

Most bearded iris are very easy to grow, give them water, fertilizer, good soil and at least 6 hours of sun daily and they will be pleased. Try growing some in mushroom compost and watch out! I planted a historic in the mushroom compost and it rebloomed, I have never found any reference to it ever reblooming.

Iris want to be planted with the top of the rhizome exposed to the sun, it loves to be sun-baked. If planting late in the year, only cover with enough soil as to hold it in place, in case of wind and rain, usually about an inch. As to the time to dig and divide iris, you can do it at any time, here is a quote from Ben Hager out of the book "The World of Iris", page 314, "Bearded iris rhizomes can be transplanted any time and they will live and eventually bloom, but for consistant results it is helpful to consider the periodic growth pattern of the iris plant". The only thing that might happen is that you might have to wait an extra bloom season before you see yours bloom.

Another tip I would have you know is that all of the roots can be shaved or cut off without much retarding of the plant's growth, they will start new roots almost immediately. This is what I have learned from my own experience and it is also in the book. I clean my iris in a 10% bleach solution.

I sincerely hope that some of these facts will enlighten you, to the not so delicate bearded iris. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Or if there is something else you would like to see here, let me know that too. Thanks for taking the time to read these facts on iris and I hope you enjoy your iris for many years to come.
