Plan Your Career Ahead! The first step in job hunting is to prepare a resume. This is not a easy work and it's extremely important because your resume is the first presentation to a potential employer. Writing a resume - A resume should usually be no longer than one page. - It should be printed on high-quality resume paper. - Always use active words, such as organized, researched, supervised, developed and the like. - Modify or customize your resume according to a specific employer's requirement. Cover Letter Another important document is the cover letter, in which you describe the particular interest you have in the potential job and your qualifications for it. Don't repeat what is included in your resume, instead, emphasize your strength and special quality required of the potential job. Interview If you get an interview, congratulations! How to prepare for an interview? Here are some tips: - Shower, comb hair, trim nails. Perfume or cologne is okay, but just a little. - Dress up. Men: solid or pin-striped blue or grey suit; solid blue or white shirt; simple, classic tie; black or brown shoes in excellent condition. Women: classic suit or pants. Accessorize minimally. - Be on time. - Carry a pen, notebook, several extra copies of your resume, transcripts and writing sample. - Be prepared to answer some typical interview questions, like why did you study law, why are you interested in our firm? - Maintain eye contact with your interviewer, sit up straight and don't fidget. - Be enthusiatic and positive. Appear pleasant, yet serious. - Bring some tissue and gum. After the interview: - Thank your interviewer for her time. e.g. "Thank you for taking the time." "I enjoyed meeting you. Please let me know if there's anything else you need from me." - Send a thank you note. Also, be prepared to receive phone calls from your interviewer. The greeting from your answering machine should be some standard greeting, formal and serious. And hey, call-back usually means good news! |
