Desert
Kingsnake
(Lampropeltis getula splendida)
Desert kingsnakes are pretty common
in Eddy county. I've found them close to and in Artesia city limits.
A neighbor called and had one in her garage on the next street from
mine. They are found throughout the county except for the mountains.
Most adults are 30"-36", but I found one that was over 40" and had a
completely unmarked head (sockhead). They have a varied diet consisting
of rodents, lizards, frogs, eggs, snakes (even venomous ones), and pretty
much anything they can fit in their mouth. I have only had one bite
me upon capture, the rest have been docile as if they were in captivity already.
I also found one that had no yellow, but only white speckling and pattern.
