Arid Land Ribbon Snake
(Thamnophis proximus diabolicus)

arid land ribbon snake

This snake is not very common in Eddy county, much less New Mexico.  It is protected by the state as well.  Eddy county does have quite a few places where you could find this snake, though.  I've only found one to date on an overcast day and the temperature was around 78 F.  It was found within a series of small ponds near the Guadalupe Mountains.  Usually growing to a length of 24" to 36", it can grow to around 48" for a larger specimen.  Almost eats frogs exclusively, although it should eat minnows and small fish.
