Big
Bend Patchnose Snake
(Salvadora deserticola)
As far as I know, this species of
patchnose snake is known in Eddy county from a single record from the
Carlsbad Caverns area near White's City. I have not yet had the
chance to look for more, but I hope to this spring. Fast and alert,
it's usually found during daylight hours looking for food which consists
of lizards, small rodents, reptile eggs, and maybe smaller snakes. It
grows to a length of about 24" to 36", although it may grow longer. The
only picture I have taken is a DOR specimen near Van Horn, Texas.
