Please Give The Gift Of Sight!

Hi! My name is Jeff; I am the recipient of a donated Cornea. I received this Cornea through the kindness of a family who recognized the value of giving the gift of sight.

In March of 1997 I was diagnosed with Chandler’s Disease, a condition in which the cells that regulate the flow of water in and out of the Cornea do not operate correctly. This resulted in the cells of my Cornea swelling and causing what I called “the swimming pool effect”. It is roughly similar to being underwater with your eyes open in a cloudy pool all the time.

Over the following year this condition worsened to the point the cells of my Cornea were bursting at the rate of 1 or 2 a day. This as you may imagine was very painful. I was scheduled for a Transplant in July of 1998.

The Transplant was successful. It was done on an outpatient basis at the U of M Kellogg Eye center. It took less than 4 hours to do (from arrival to release). I missed only 4 working days.

My sight in that eye is still a little blurred due to the associated astigmatism. My eyesight in that eye has been poor since birth, due to an underdeveloped Optic Nerve. I do not plan any further corrective action.

I would like to ask you to consider signing the donor pledge on your Driver’s License today. Also please be sure and discuss this decision with your family, as they will be the ones to make the final decision. Please take a moment to view the links below for further information:
