Also
called a foil, the epee was a fencing or dueling sword having
a cup hilt and a rigid 35-inch blade with no cutting edge. The
blade had a fluted triangular section that tapered to a sharp
point. The tip was usually capped for use during non-combative
sword play. There are few references to the epee prior to the
17th century, and almost none to its use as a weapon outside
of
dueling.
