Born
on August 14, 1840, in Mannheim, Germany, Krafft-Ebing was a
neuropsychiatrist who was a pioneering professor of
sexual psychopathology, helping to advance psyhoclogy as a clinical
science. He first coined the term masochist, inspired
by
the life of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. He did not see the terms
sadism and masochism as compliments as they are commonly
thought of today. Sadists were sexually aroused by inflicting
pain on others or themselves. Masochists on the other hand were
aroused by fantasies of being controlled, dominated and humiliated.
Krafft-Ebing died in Maria Grun, Austria, on December 22,
1902
