Born
in Lemberg, Austria (now Lviv, Ukraine) in 1836, Sacher-Masoch,
an Austrian writer, was best known for his novel Venus
im Pelz (1874, translated to Venus in Furs
in 1931). This novel as did all his writings detailed his masochistic
fantasies and
Venus is a true story of one of his escapades. Some of his other
writings include: Eine Galizische Geschichte 1846
(A Galician
Story 1846, 1858); Das Vermachtnis Kains (The Legacy of
Cain, 1870-1877) which includes Venus in Furs His
name and
his life was the inspiration for the term masochist.
He died in Austria in 1895
