The busiest quarter since these rankings began saw 100 games played between 36 teams. Hong Kong made its official ODI debut in the Asia Cup playing games against Bangladesh and Pakistan. It lost both but wasn't disgraced. Sri Lanka went on to win the tournament earning enough points to climb to second on the rankings.
USA also played its first official ODIs as part of the ICC Champions Trophy in England. Like Hong Kong, it lost both its games (against Australia and New Zealand) but the defeats were very heavy and led to a decline in its ranking. West Indies were the surprise winners of the Trophy but some indifferent form earlier in the quarter in the Natwest Series against England and New Zealand meant the Windies actually dropped a place on the table despite increasing their rating slightly.
Also played during the quarter were the European, American and African championships which saw Ireland, Holland, Scotland, Denmark, Canada, USA, Bermuda, Namibia and Uganda qualify for the ICC Trophy in Ireland next year.
