| The
Sovereign Class exploration cruiser and it's newer subclass, the Kirov,
have been the top of the line in heavy cruisers for the past 40 years.
The Sovereign Class Development Project began in 2368, just after
the Battle of World 359, where 39 starships and thousands of crewmen
from both Starfleet and the Klingon Defense Force lost their lives to
the Borg. It was designed not only to fulfill the usual exploration
duties expected of any heavy cruiser to come out of space dock, but
also, during wartime, to be the flagships in squadrons consisting of a
group of newer starships developed concurrently. These other starships
consisted of the Akira, Steamrunner, Saber, and Defiant
class starships.
The Sovereign class took advantage of many advanced designs that had just been developed and tested in other starship classes. These advances include the bio-neural computer circuitry first used in the Intrepid class destroyer and the quantum torpedoes first used in the USS Defiant. This class of vessel also uses the most powerful phaser strips ever to be designed for a starship, rated at Type XII. |
