The former King of Hell, haunting the tavern that belonged to Cyrene-she was burned alive by the villagers who thought she was a witch for Mephistopheles.  Mephistopheles' evil ways had intended to kill Eve so that he could be made flesh and rule the known-world.  Luckily Xena was able to kill him and save her daughters life, also replacing Mehistopheles with the cocky Archangel Lucifer.
