EXPOSURE
Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless, poisonous gas with characteristic odor of rotten eggs. It is generated as a common by-product of many industrial and manufacturing processes and during the decomposition of sulfur containing compounds. Hydrogen sulfide is found in natural gas, volcanic gas and certain natural spring waters. Exposure may occur in manufacturing facilities, mining processes, hydrocarbon research and developement activities and at sewage and certain waste treatment plants.
The principle route of exposure to hydrogen sulfide is inhalation. Hydrogen sulfide is classified as a asphyxiate. Hydrogen sulfide can interfere with cellular respiration and cause death (biochemical suffocation). At very low concentrations less than 10 ppm H2S can cause irritation to the eyes, mucos membranes and upper respiratory system. At concentrations between 10 ppm and 50 ppm persons tend to experience mild headaches, dizziness as well as eye and upper respiratory  irritation. When concentrations reach 50 ppm to 200 ppm severe eye and respiratory tract irrritation, acute conjunctivitis, lacrimation and difficulty breathing as well as a sudden loss of conscious. Prolong exposures at these levels may lead to bronchitis, pneumonitis and migraine headaches. At higher levels a severe loss of motor coordination, coma, pulmanary edema, respiratory paralysis and death can occur.
