OLDTIMER'S X10 FORUM
HOME PAGE
This site is in response to several requests and suggestions that were made in the past  by various posters on the X10 Forum, mainly TakeTheActive, who wanted to know more about the instruction book, or FAQ, I maintain so that my family will know what to do about all of our technology if something happens to me.  Others suggested we should show what our X10 installations look like.

X10 SYSTEM OVERVIEW:  This is the big picture of my small X10 system.  You'll recognize where some of my forum posts came from as you read it.  Later on I'll explain how I drew it.  By the way don't hesitate to blow these diagrams up in your PDF viewer so you can see them better.`For some reason the X10 diagram looks much cleaner when printed than when viewed on your computer screen.  Use Normal mode when printing all four diagrams.

RELATED SYSTEMS: To put the X10 system in context you need an equally high level overview of the other electronics in the house.  In my case the key to the WAF is that as much of it as possible should be invisible including the X10.  Here are diagrams of the other systems:

COMPUTER OVERVIEW

VIDEO OVERVIEW

TELEPHONE OVERVIEW

Each of the four overviews is the introductory page of that section of the FAQ.  It was only recently that I learned from another poster on the Forum about the software (see below) I used to produce them.  These overview diagrams have been the missing links in the FAQ since I  started working on it in 1997.

There is much more detailed technical info about some of these systems in the FAQ which I may post later if there's any interest.

THE INSTRUCTION BOOK, OR FAQ:  Once I started woking on it it became obvious to my wife and I that the FAQ was the ideal place to put all kinds of essential personal and financial info, as well as technical stuff, that would be needed by the family if something happened to either or both of us, and that is how it's evolved.  So we won't be posting it here.  To give you an idea of the extent of the information included here's the Index Page.

THE DRAWING SOFTWARE is Edge Diagrammer.  I have to thank RMS59 for introducing me to this.  I have used all kinds of paint and drawing programs including AutoCad light.  Frankly for the kind of diagrams shown here this is simply the best I've ever used and well worth its nominal price tag.  It is so feature rich that it takes a little getting used to, but it comes with an excellent, well written, instruction manual.

After you download Edge, you'll want to also download
Extension Pack One and the Net Extension Pack both of which will work with the 30 day free trial version and are free add-ons if you buy the program.

Once you have Edge Diagrammer there are two symbol libraries in ZIP format you can down load from my site that will come in handy.

ELECTRICAL DIAGRAM ELEMENTS - This is my version of a symbol library that is in the public domain at the Electronics Club. I had to rotate some of these from horizontal to vertical and add them to the library since Edge doesn't rotate symbols.

X10 DIAGRAM ELEMENTS - Guess where these came from!

Add a folder named "Symbols" to the EDGE32 Clipart folder in your Program Files and unzip the electrical elements into it.  Then add a folder named "X10" to the same EDGE32 Clipart folder and unzip the X10 elements into it.  I defined new Templates called
Wiring Diagram and X10 Diagram (both based on the General Purpose Diagram) to hold these types of diagrams and other set up info.

LINE NOISE & SIGNAL SUCKER FATIGUE SYNDROME

My Avatar is an illustration from James Thurber"s book "The Thirteen Clocks".  I've always had an affinity for the picture.  The book itself is a 50 year old fairy tale that our kids enjoyed as much as I did.  This is the quote from the text underneath:

"My father was a wizard who often cast his spells on himself when he was in his cups"

I don't drink that much but I can sympathise with the wizard, particularly when I get tired and then make a mess of things.
