317th Infantry Regiment
80th "Blue Ridge" Infantry Division
World War II
My grandfather served in the 317th Infantry Regiment in WWII.  He died before I was born, and, like so many others, didn't really talk much about his experiences.  The only reason we found out he was in the 317th was from a Bronze Star certificate signed by General McBride and his Blue Ridge patch.

When I tried to find out about his experiences, I realized that not much was written about the 317th, with the exception of Mr. Robert Murrell's operational history.  In order to find out about the 317th, I went through several history books.  I am currently working on my masters degree and chose the 317th as the topic of my thesis as an excuse to write about the 317th.

I've posted my current rough draft which is linked below along with an article about crossing the Moselle River at Pont-a-Mousson. Please feel free to contact me with information or corrections.  Also, I will add links to websites concerning the 317th as I get time.

I would like to add that when I wrote the thesis, I was limited in the number of pages I could write.  Therefore, I could not go into the amount of detail I wanted to.  The end result is that I could not put all of the towns or battles that the 317th experienced.  Instead, I tried to focus on the big battles and the veterans accounts that I could link to them.
