On August 1st, the 90th Division passed to Third Army control, commanded by General George Patton. Eddie’s 3rd Battalion was informed it would be the infantry element of Task Force Clark. This special task force was under the command of Lt. Col. Clarke (commanding the 358th Infantry). Their mission was to move south and seize the bridges over the Selune River near St. Hilaire du Harcouet.
On August 1st, at 11 PM, they were they
motorized out of Cathelmais by Quartermaster trucks and
passed through the towns of Coutances, Gavray, La Haye Pesnel and Avranches.
They arrived at Isigny-le-Buat, where they detrucked. They began a march
towards St Hilaire du Harcouet, an important road center. They encountered
few enemy on the way. The found the main bridges across the Selune west
of the city intact and seized the high ground overlooking it. Racing across
the bridge, two platoons of Company K met enemy small arms and machinegun
fire, but fought their way into town, followed by the rest of Task Force
Clark. By 3 PM, Company K had secured the town. They were preparing to
stay the night when at 6 PM, an order was received to move out to secure
the town of Louvigne-du-Desert, which is 15 kilometers south. They had
a long road march during a very dark night, as enemy planes buzzed overhead
nonstop. Lauvigne was taken by 1 AM on August 2nd with
no enemy resistance. A number of Germans were shot while they tried to
get away in trucks.
