SAGA was founded as an inclusive group by St. John's Episcopal Church in Charleston, WV,  to advocate the dignity of human sexuality in all of its orientations, genders, and life-enriching relationships in the spirit of God's love.   All are welcome to be a part of this organization in the hope of finding God's wisdom, strength, and healing through a spirit of education, fellowship, mutual respect and confidential sharing.

What makes SAGA different?

1.  SAGA is a faith-based organization that believes God's love is for everyone regardless of sexual orientation.

2.  SAGA strives to be a clearinghouse of information on organization and resources for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community including a small but diverse collection of resources available in our library.

3.  SAGA is a group of people, both gay and straight, who want to provide a framework to learn from each other in the church and the community.

What types of things does SAGA do?

SAGA members have been instrumental in planning the interfaith service for the 2001 state gay pride week.  They meet monthly with invited guests or members sharing an experience, story, or revelation that has impacted their lives.  The Straight And Gay Alliance, along with CAMC, hosted an educational conference on sexual identity and youth on March 1, 2002, is planning a spiritual study group for gay men, and has established at St. John's the framework of a resource center of books, magazines and other educational material that is accessible to all.

How did SAGA begin?

SAGA had its first meeting in December 2000 with several members of St. John's Episcopal Church.  They desired a forum for candid discussion on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered issues with the hope of dispelling stereotypes through education and affirming life-enriching relationships.  Since then SAGA has had many guest speakers including the president of PFLAG, representatives from the WV Lesbian and Gay Coalition and from the West Virginia Attorney General's Hate Crimes Task Force.  Membership includes people from other churches and from the community.
