ANTICIPATION is building as the mammoth 17th World Youth Day (WYD) event approaches in Toronto.

Organizers are predicting that the July 18 - 28 gathering will attract hundreds of thousands of young people from around the world. They are hoping that the ailing Pope John Paul II will be able to attend the event, which will be the first WYD to be held in a Canadian city.

Sheep, a Greater Vancouver Catholic worship band, have been chosen to perform at the Youth Festival portion of WYD, which will take place July 23 - 26. Sheep were chosen from among close to 500 arts applicants, from 45 different countries. The band will be one of 150 music, drama and dance groups from 30 countries.

In addition to the live performances, WYD will also include a film festival, presenting Catholic faith in various forms. The festival will also present the world premiere of a documentary about Mother Teresa.

Leading up to WYD, the World Youth Day Cross -- originally blessed by the pontiff in Rome -- has been carried through various Canadian cities; recently, the cross was taken to Ground Zero, the site of the tragic September events in New York. 48 Canadian young people are currently carrying the cross from Montreal; it will arrive in Toronto June 11.

WYD is receiving considerable promotion: in mid-April, groups of young people gathered in various locations across the country, to form the letters 'WYD' with candles; and the Toronto Sun recently published a lavish 60-page magazine about the event. In conjunction with WYD, a prestigious art exhibition will be held June 8 - August 11, at the Royal Ontario Museum; entitled 'Images of Salvation,' it will feature paintings, sculptures and manuscripts from the Vatican and Italian collections.

Sheep recently finished their first CD, Supernatural Love. Leading up to WYD, the group will be playing at several venues throughout the Archdiocese of Vancouver. For more information about the group's ministry, contact: Ed Della Luna at; dellalun@hotmail.com.
