There are several forms of missions, but here in Tacna the most common is short-term missions.  There is an abundance of work to be done here in Tacna and short-term teams give us the opportunity to do many activities that we would like to do but lack the man-power.  The teams that come usually have a good idea of what they are doing because they have planned out what type of work and/or presentations they will be doing.  When doing social work the teams need to raise support to purchase the materials.  Almost all social work is in the form of construction, becuase one of the best outreaches is to provide families with better living conditions due to the tremendous need. The social work also goes to provide the members of the church with the same needs.  Below are some pictures of the construction done for a couple of families.  Another form of social work is to simply visit houses and bless them with general goods, such as detergent, vegetable oil, etc.

Social Work
Presentations
Along with the social work of helping people in a tangible way, short-term missions teams almost always participate in the street evangelism ministry.  There are many forms to do this, but it usually consists of puppets, music, and/or a drama.  It is a tremendous blessing when the teams can bring some new material or a pre-planned show to present.  This provides us with a few more days to work, as opposed to practice, and it also gives the town and the churches new material to use throughout the year.  The presentations are an effective tool to get the Word out to the people.
Internships
Internships is one of the best ways to learn, serve, and confirm your calling..  There are several internship options through IAM (missions organization) to work here in Tacna.  The most common are internships between 3 months and a year.  The longer the internship the better you can learn the language well enough to communicate with the locals.  There are several important reasons for internships.  The first is to confirm a calling to overseas missions.  We are all called to be missionaries, but the question is if that is to be in our own country or in another. The next reason is to be a blessing.  While you are here you are to live the normal christian life that blesses those who are around you.  Many times you will live in a household where not everyone is a christian and you will have the opportunity to lead them to Christ through your actions more than your words.  That is another blessing of not knowing the language well, your actions speak clearly what kind of person you are.  Also, while you are interning in Tacna you will be subject to much work, which will include studying Spanish, building relationships, construction, etc.  The most important job here as missionary or interns is to build up the church so it is able to run and grow independently.  Once that is done our work is complete.  Tacna is a small city with much work to be done.  If you feel a calling to be a part of this work, or wish to confirm your calling to overseas missions, contact Brian Ridenour at bcridenour@gmail.com.  His information is located on the Contact Us page.
