The most famous weight-for-age race in Australia is undoubtedly the Moonee Valley Race Club's W.S. Cox Plate which is run each October between the
Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Named in honour of Sam Cox, the founder of Moonee Valley, the race is now acknowledged as one of the classic events of the international racing calendar and the only southern
hemisphere race to be included in the World Series. Many outstanding horses have won the race since its first running in 1922 and the names are well-known to keen followers of the Australian turf. Among them are
Manfred, Phar Lap, Ajax, the great mare Flight, Rising Fast, Tulloch, Tobin Bronze. And latter day heroes Gunsynd, Kingston Town (winner of three consecutive Cox Plates), Octagonal, Might and Power and of course
the mighty New Zealand mare, Sunline. The following pages list all the winners - breeding, jockeys and trainers. . |
