Welcome to Writing Scholarships - a newsletter with links to scholarships, grants, competitions, contests, internships, call for entries, residencies, fellowships, funding, and other opportunities for creative writers, screenwriters and teleplay writers, writing educators and students of all ages. There are geographic restrictions that govern the award of most scholarships, so the information provided is limited to the UK, USA and Australia/New Zealand.

WRITING EDUCATION AND SCREENWRITING

Universities and colleges offer a confusing array of scholarships - often based upon conditions set out in charitable trusts. These generally have very strict geographic terms (that is, you have to live in the state or city to be considered). There are several colleges that offer scholarships to the broader community:

Writers Academy (www.writersacademy.net) has a number of scholarships provided by corporate sponsors and government funding bodies. While these do have some geographic (residency) conditions, many are open to all applicants.

These awards fund the Master Writers Program - an intense course comprising three 10 week modules led by leading screenwriters and conducted online with optional face to face elements. They claim to be the only college that teaches screenwriting exclusively, and boast that they offer a '30 week MFA'.

Gotham (writingclasses.com) grants a few students free entry to its online programs, through registering an email address. This is a draw rather than a scholarship and is one element of the school's certificate program rather than a complete program.

Trace (see ad) is part of the University of Nottingham (UK). They will consider scholarship applications for undergraduate programmes.

The only way to work through the university scholarships is to do the leg work. We've done some of this for you. The following links are for bona fide universities and colleges:
