"The reader should be aware that many of the poems and stories that appear on our pages are in response to topic ‘challenges’, and certain restrictions to required words, phrases and ideas confine the efforts of the writer. Paul's poem "Needles Of Ice" is a response to one of our challenges."

Needles of ice drive into my heart.
It’s worse on a long winter’s evening.
Your laughing eyes did depart
Like snow showers of deceiving.

A blackened hearth is all that remains.
Like a pig on a spit, my mood’s turning.
Your frosty breath on window panes,
Remind me of marshmallow clouds that are burning.

You’re like winter sunshine through a zipper
Or wisps of fog on a mountain trail.
My dear, you should stop acting like Flipper,
And yellow cake icing does nothing for your sex appeal.

And so, my little chickadee,
I send you this Solstice greeting.
If again, your candy-sweet lips I see,
With stepping stones, I’ll give you a beating.
