Petrified garden hardened by frost,
As temperatures dipped unexpected.
Could have been covered, now may be lost -
Plants should never have been neglected.

Nature can be full of surprises.
Though rain may be falling while still light,
Before the next morning sun rises,
Snowflakes just might repaint the world white.

The garden lies dormant, in deep freeze,
Tentative is the grasp of its roots.
Next afternoon brings a warming breeze,
And the gardener sheds her rubber boots.

Tender loving care she now exerts,
Spraying warm water on each stem.
Plants soon respond to her gentle squirts,
And she finds she has lost none of them.

Reminded now that winter is near,
And her flowers will certainly die,
She prepares her garden for next year,
And cuts bouquets for friends who drop by.
