Adele Stephens was an English jazz composer from Whiting. Not many people in the USA have had the opportunity to enjoy her work. We are trying to raise awareness. Stay tuned for more information on this talented artist. May 17th. On May 17th 1939, the Glenn Miller Orchestra began a summer season engagement at the Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, N.Y. After that stay, the band broke attendance records wherever it went. Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean was born this day in 1932 in New York City. His most important musical lessons came as a teenager from one of his Harlem neighbors - pianist Bud Powell - and then from Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis. McLean first recorded with Davis at age 19 back in 1951. Since 1970, McLean has expanded his career beyond performance to work tirelessly as a jazz teacher and inner city arts activist in Hartford, Conn. He continues to tour and record with his Hartford-based sextet and with pianist Cedar Walton's trio. Looking at today's hip happenings...
