Gerald Wright

Gerald is a Rosebud Sioux tribal member and has lived on the Rosebud Reservation all of his life.

Wright Shawls' mission is to create custom hand made shawls, Sundance skirts and dresses "Made WRIGHT for you!". All of these are traditional Lakota crafts that are considered important ceremonial regalia. They represent many generations of skill and reverence, expressing and representing the Lakota culture. Wright Shawls is a home based manufacturing business, where Gerald creates shawls for ladies and girls that are worn at Pow-Wows and Sundances and dresses and skirts worn by Sundancers. All of these can and have been traditional gifts given out at many ceremonies.

Twenty years ago, Mae Horse Looking/Swimmer taught her son, Gerald, how to make shawls. He created three and sold them to the Sioux Trading Post in Mission, South Dakota. The sale of these shawls and compliments that the purchasers recieved inspired Gerald to begin creating more and selling more. In carrying this tradition, each of these shawls is dedicated, in loving memory, to his mother.

Sales of the shawls increase during certain times of the year, coinciding with Pow-Wow season, Sundance season, graduation and the annual Rosedbud Fair. Throughout the year, memorial services, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and other miscellaneous occasions provide.
