In true Canadian fashion, a good lad from Thunder Bay excels in hockey, gets
drafted by Kingston in the Ontario Hockey League and goes on to become... a Canadian Vampire?
Such is the tale of Ian Hodgkinson. He started the 1984 season with Kingston,
but didn't finish the year. Instead, Hodgkinson got into rock 'n roll and drifted off to California. From California,
it wasn't a big leap to Mexico and lucha libre style wrestling in the early nineties.
Cast as El Vampiro Canadienese (Canadian Vampire), he became one of the most
popular wrestlers in Mexico, and a sex symbol to boot. Most of his time was spent in EMLL and CMLL.
He won the UWA World Title and FILL Title during his time in Mexico. While
in EMLL, Konnan and Vampiro developed a real backstage hatred for one another, with Konnan at one point threatening
to kill Ian (Vampiro) and his wife.
Despite his success and the hype surrounding him, Hodgkinson never made it
to the big time until a WCW tryout with WCW in June 1998. Several dark matches, and Vampiro was becoming a big
hit, yet he didn't appear on television.
On March 18, 1999, Vampiro finally made his WCW television debut against Prince
Iaukea in grand fashion. He initially formed an alliance with underground music's Insane Clown Posse, and later
with the Misfits.
Today, Vampiro is becoming an increasingly recognized attraction in WCW. However,
this strange character has still only gotten started.
