Wrestling has always been in Jeff Jarrett's blood. The son of long-time promoter Jerry Jarrett, Jeff made his pro debut in 1986 against Tony Falk.

Jeff became a mainstay in Southern wrestling. He won the WCCW light heavyweight, then moved on to the USWA where he became a signature star. Jarrett won the USWA tag team titles eleven times (three times with Robert "Tennessee Lee" Fuller; twice each with Matt "Doink" Borne, Jeff Gaylord and Jerry Lawler, and once each with Brian Christopher and Cody Michaels), as well as the USWA heavyweight belt three times from 1993 to 1996 (defeated Jerry Lawler twice and Ahmed Johnson).

But it was upon his WWF debut in 1994 that Jarrett's career took off. He took on the gimmick of "the world's greatest singer, the world's greatest entertainer, and the world's greatest wrestler". He came out with a music single titled "With My Baby Tonight" that began showing up at house show merchandise stands. He took on "The Roadie" Jesse James as a partner/manager, and in January of 1995, the duo worked well together as Jarrett defeated Razor Ramon at the Royal Rumble for the Intercontinental title. He'd lose and win the title on two more occasions, but then on July 23, 1995, he lost the gold to Shawn Michaels and disappeared. It then came out that his "hit single" had actually been sung by the Roadie, not Jarrett.

In late 1996, Jarrett followed most other WWF stars by making his way to WCW. Although he captured the U.S. title there, his role was more or less that of a jobber. When his contract came up in late 1997, talks with WCW broke off, and Jarrett re-signed with the WWF. This time around, he wished to not be called "Double J" or to have a country music star gimmick.

In his second WWF stint, Jarrett had some difficulty maintaining success. He even went back to the original "Double J" character, but it didn't help. Then, Jarrett took on the former Debra McMichael as his manager, cut his hair, and developed a "don't piss me off" attitude. He brought a guitar with him to the ring and regularly nailed his adversaries with it, regardless if they were male or female. The new-look Jarrett (thanks in part to Debra) became a star again, winning the WWF tag team (with the late Owen Hart), Intercontinental and European titles.

In October of 1999, Jarrett's WWF contract expired, and he surprised the wrestling world by abruptly jumping ship back to WCW. His character didn't change after the jump, as he kept the same look, same attitude, and same taste for swinging a guitar. With WCW's "higher powers" on his side, he has become the "Chosen One", and one of the company's top performers.
