The civil war in Uganda allowed extensive poaching and only small family groups like the one shown here, mom and dad and two kittens, survive. Linda and I had opted out of climbing a mountain on this particular day so our guide Steven took us on our own private safari to a place called Queen’s Mile in Mweya. We came upon this family of lions and watched as they went about their everyday life.

The small mane and the tawny color of this male are characteristic of lions in this area of Africa.

The battle scars of living in the wilds of Africa. It cannot be an easy life

It is rare to see a male lion interact with the cubs, but because of the small family groups the male plays a larger role in the raising of the cubs.
