Jeff Tam Spring Training 2002
Rockies sign Tam to Minor League Deal with an invitation to Spring Training
DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Jeff Tam on a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

Tam was on the Blue Jays' Opening Day roster last season.  Tam appeared in 44 games before being sent down to Syracuse (AAA) on July 10. The 33-year old right-hander posted an 0-4 record with a 5.64 ERA and one save as a Blue Jay. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Mets in 1993, the Melbourne, FL native possesses a lifetime record of 7-14 with a 3.91 ERA and seven saves in 251 career relief appearances.

2.89 or 3.01?

Oakland -  If you surf the web looking for Jeff Tam's 2001 stats, you will find his ERA is listed at 3.01.  I however beg to differ.  His ERA should be 2.89 and here is why.
On April 13, the Texas Rangers were soundly beating the A's 12-1 in the seventh when Jeff entered the game.  He got through the seventh and eighth unscathed.  The controversial run happened in the ninth.
Rusty Greer led off with a double, Frank Catalanotto then grounded out to Jeff, with Greer holding at second.  This brought up former A  Bo Porter.  Porter singled to left, however Jeremy Giambi bobbled the ball and Greer was allowed to score.  Giambi was charged with an error on the play and Porter stayed at first.  Rafael Palmeiro then singled before Jeff got Ivan Rodriguez to ground into a double play.
The box score the next day said Jeff had given up a run but no earned runs, a fact which is still reflected in the box score (See the link below).  However baseball shows his stats as giving up an earned run that evening.  Had Giambi not bobbled the ball, Greer could have been thrown out.  Porter would not have scored that inning and no run would have been given up.  This is why Jeff's ERA should be listed as 2.89 for the 2001 season.

Box Score for 13 April 2001 against Texas.

Topps issues first Major League card of Jeff Tam

The Topps Chewing Gum company has released the first ever Jeff Tam Major League Baseball card.  The card is part of the Series 1 2001 50th Anniversary Topps baseball set.
Tam, who enjoyed a spectacular season with the A's in 2000 is the only single player rookie card in the entire series.  He is pictured firing a pitch off of the mound in his black A's jersey.
In addition to the regular issue card, Topps has also issued a limited edition Gold Parallel of this card.  Both cards are numbered 297 in the series.
