History

Perhaps it is kinder to let our ancestors sleep, because of secrets they want to keep.

But then again, I like to suppose, our ancestors would like me to disturb their long repose.

And perhaps when I visit their place of rest, or read of their lives and learn how they met the “tests”.

Of early life in pioneer land, I’ll respect their efforts, though maybe not so grand.

As building sky-scrapers and super sonic planes, but theirs was the courage that cleared this land and sowed the grain.

In spite of, they gave us this country that that is now ours,

And I feel when I shake the family tree,

They know and are glad somehow, that some one cares.

The Walters family ancestors can be traced back through the centuries to the era called the “Dark Ages”.

The name began more than 700 years ago and was the first a simple identification which distinguished one person from another.

The name has been recorded in several spellings found in old documents, land fine and taxation records and town rolls.

This was the start of our name, and by the 14th century, records indicate that it had become a hereditary surname.

Our name is patronymic.  It derives from the identification of one of our ancestors by his father or grandfather’s name.

Centuries ago, after the original families had emerged from humble beginning to a degree of prominence; a Coat of Arms was granted and later confirmed in official heraldic records.

Another tribute to the name WALTERS

There is little doubt that early bearers of our name were involved with several military – religious orders established under the Holy Roman Emperor with the purpose of Christianizing some of the “Pagan” countries in the Baltic areas.  The Teutonic Knights, an order which rose to power and prestige in the 13th century, undertook a crusade against Prussia, eventually settling the territory with Germanic colonists.

Because of the many Germanic military orders that were closely associated with the Christian church the coat of arms reflects the military and civic accomplishments of these knights.  Prominent in Germanic Arms are the eagles of the Empire, the Austrian Imperial Eagle, the gold eagle of Silesia, the black eagle of lower Silesia.

The lions appearing in the coat of arms are reflections of service to the powerful princes and dukes of the protectorates and duchies of Germany.

The Lions of Luxemburg, the Czech lion reflecting the Silesian dukes, recognition of supremacy of Czech kings, since Silesia was a part of the kingdom of Bohemia until the rein of Maria Theresa of Austria.  Poland is closely allied with German rule and was once a part of German Silesia and Prussia.

Our coat of arms is an important link with the early Warriors who bore our name.  We can place the emergence of the armorial bearing after the 15tgh century when a number of issues were confirmed to loyal followers of the ruling monarchs of the Germanic Kingdom

This is intended only as a starting point for a future history of our family.  How large and complete this future history will be depends in a large part on how much all the members of the families will help in supplying information on their own part of the family.

Following is a very brief list of the early members of the family which should enable you to place your own immediate family.

If any one has dates and names not listed, please pass on, so we can keep it up to date as much as we can.
