BC Motorcycle Roadracing 2003 - rounds 2 & 3

article and photos by Lorne Vogt

Cramming half a season of motorcycle roadracing into one weekend can be stressful. The second and third rounds of the four round Westwood Motorcycle Racing Club / MotoEvents 2003 BC Road Race Series at Mission Raceway Park (sponsored by Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and X-FM Radio) for some were a blessing and others a curse.

Rain may have played a major role in Round 1, but July 26 and 27 were perfectly normal summer days. Hot & sunny, yes, but to be honest, it was hotter than the locals are used to, and fans and racers alike struggled to keep hydrated and sunblocked. Definitely not good weather to be dressed in leather.

Round 2 Report

#1 Steve Dick had a bad day in Saturday's Round 2. Struggling? Pushing too hard? Uncharacteristically, the former Canadian Superbike champion crashed on more than one occasion - twice in the same lap, even! When's the last time THAT happened? After crashing in the first leg of Richmond Motorsports Pro Superbike, Steve remounted and got under way again (presumably returning to the pits, since laying down results in an automatic DNF) and fell in turn 8 again. A DNF in the superbike class may prevent Mr. Dick from keeping that #1 superbike plate in 2003. Steve didn't win any races in round 2 - a second place in Mspeed Performance 600 Supersport and another second place in Open Supersport were the only decent results that Steve got on Saturday, as he crashed out of the second superbike leg at the end of the day.

#144 Mark Kruger did a good job Saturday of getting to the checkers (or to the chequers, as my pal Denzil in Portsmouth would say). When Steve Dick crashed out of the first superbike race, Mark finished first by a healthy margin. Then he won the Pro 600 Supersport race. Then he won the Open Supersport race. Then he won the second leg of Open Superbike. Four for four made it a great day for Mark and his Kawasaki.

#125 Oliver Jervis finished second in both Open Superbike legs and third in Pro 600 Supersport. Jervis is getting faster on his Kawasaki every time out, it seems.

#69 Paul Ludwig on his CR500 won the Clearbrook Motorsport Formula 3 race AND the Formula 2 race. Paul seems to be in a class of his own. As the holeshot master, Paul gets great starts and nobody bothers him up front. #26 Tom Fayle was the next fastest in round 2 of Formula 3 on another Honda supermoto machine. Tom is of the foot-out-forward school of cornering and it obviously works for him.

Ludwig won in Formula 2 and #51 Brian Steidle finished second. #100 Misti Hurst took third, a good finish after missing the qualifier for SV Cup in the morning due to a bike that wouldn't start on the pre grid. Once the starter motor and clogged carb were dealt with, Misti got down to business and got on the podium in both her races, with a second place in SV Cup.

Brian Steidle won the SV Cup race with #93 Kathy Hubble in third.

The SV Cup is run simultaneously with Open Twins, which makes the starting grid a challenge. #38 Rick Earle was the winner of the House of Buell Open Twins class, with #99 Andy Bishop on his RC51 in second. #17 Rick Johnson, WMRC prisident, finished third, bettering his fourth place finish in Round 1. The Open Twins class is beginning to swell, with more entrants every event.

In Amateur 600 Supersport, #6 John Parker won with #36 Jonathan Jeske in second, same as Round 1.

The Sportsman class saw #799 Eddie McNaughton easily take the win.

The Novice class was dominated by #771 Steve O'Toole, a definite mover through the ranks.

Round 3 Report

Roadracers had only one day to recover from round 2, to get themselves and their machinery ready for another day of competition.

#1 Steve Dick was a new man on Sunday. Back to his usual style, Steve won both legs of Richmond Motorsports Pro Superbike - but he suffered a DNF in Mspeed Performance 600 Supersport and that means that Dick gives up his #1 plate for this class next year. A second place in Open Supersport was hard fought, as he finished the race with a funky upswept tailpipe. Dick might keep his #1 Open Supersport plate, but Mark Kruger won the race. Mark has won all three Open Supersport races in 2003. Kruger won the 600 Supersport race in round 3 as well. A second place in the first leg of superbike was pretty good, but Mark fell unhurt in turn 2 in the second leg and finished the day a little early. Six wins in a weekend should be enough for anybody! Way to go, Mark.

#125 Oliver Jervis, #2 Scott Borthwick and #101 Troy Burstyk scooped up most of the remaining points in the superbike class, after Dick and Kruger had their fill. Jervis also took third place in Pro 600, with #16 Brent Luebkert in second. #7 Marbod Kern got on the podium in the Open Supersport race with a third place finish.

The top 3 riders in Pro Superbike and Pro 600 Supersport (on the same bikes) all ran laps in the 1:09s all weekend. Lap records may have fallen in rounds 2 and 3.

#69 Paul Ludwig kept right on winning through Round 3. He has won all three 2003 rounds of Formula 3 and won both Formula 2 races of the weekend to add to his second place in round 1. Supermoto bikes continued to dominate in the Formula 3 class, with #66 Bart Brown in second place on another Honda and #88 Scott Ponuick on a Kawasaki in third. Brown was fast in round 2 as well, but tangled with another rider and went down.

There is no motard stranglehold in Formula 2, as #51 Brian Steidle took second place with round 1's winner #286 Ken Botham charging through the pack to take third.

SV Cup results were identical to those of Round 2, down through fifth place. Steidle is working hard staying ahead of Hurst and Hubble, as both ladies are focussed on getting the win for themselves. In House of Buell Open Twins, #286 Ken Botham made up for a DNF in Round 2 by winning in Round 3. #38 Rick Earle finished second after winning the first two rounds, and WMRC prez #17 Rick Johnson got on the podium twice in two days with another third place finish. #814 Rande Martin loaned her Buell to Andii Adamick of motoevents.ca who finished fifth.

Amateur 600 Supersport results were identical to Round 2. #6 John Parker has won all three rounds, and #36 Jonathan Jeske has taken second place at all three rounds.

#771 Steve O'Toole took first place in the Sportsman class. Two wins this weekend mean that he won't be a novice for long.

#815 Greg Forrest was the fast Novice of the day.

Although the weather was hot and sunny, the crowds seemed smaller than normal. The Comox Airshow, the Chilliwack airshow, and the Vancouver Molson Indy occurring simultaneously might have had an damping effect on the number of roadrace fans in Mission. X-FM radio support still made the weekend a hard sell. Nonetheless, attendance topped 1100 spectators for the race weekend.

Big thanks go out to all those dedicated hardworking people that made it possible for this event to happen. Extra big thanks go to Andii Adamick, without his help this roadracing report would not have been possible.

The final fourth round of the 2003 series happens Sunday October 5th at Mission Raceway Park. Gates open at 8 AM and racing finishes at 4:30 PM. The 2003 series champions will be crowned that day. Hope to see you there!
