The Hackney Pony history starts with the Hackney Horse. If you would like to know more about the Horse please follow the links below. There is a lot more to the Hackney history then what I have here. I can not write it all without writing it page from page from a book by Tom Ryder, The High Stepper. This book covers a lot of the lines. My main goal here was to put the history of when the Hackney pony came to Canada. I hope I cover this without confusing everyone. I know I got a bit mixed up with it all. I suggest that if you want to do more of a history to find the book above. It is no longer in print so you will have to search around for it. I found mine on Amazon.com for a good price.

The history of the pony starts with a very successful breeder named Mr. Christopher Wilson. Mr. Wilson owned a stallion named Sir George. Foaled in 1866, by Hart's Sportsman 796, by the Yorkshire Prickwillow 624, by Taylor's Performer. The breeding of Sir George's dam, Polly was not know. A mare said to have been a thoroughbred named The Pet foaled a filly by Sir George. This filly was named Snorer. Snorer and two other daughters by Sir George were bred back to him and then the resulting fillies bred back to him again. By using this method Mr. Wilson was able to establish a secure foundation for the breed.

In 1888 a colt named Cassius was foaled. Even though he was from a family of Hackney Horses on both sides he did not get any bigger then 14 hands. Cassius was breed by C.E. Cooke. Mr. Cook had three mares of the Belle family, all by Confidence. One of these mares was named Belle 5th. Belle could be traced back to a descendent from a mare foaled in 1830 by Norfolk Hero, who was the dam of a mare by Marshland Shales. Marshland Shales being one of the foundation sires of the Hackney Horse. Belle 5th was breed to Cadet, by Lord Derby 2nd, out of Princess, by Denmark. Mr. Cook also owned a mare named Spot. Spot was by a thoroughbred named Premier, out of a mare by Norfolk Hero, grand-dam by Farrer's Bellfounder by Jary's Bellfounder. Spot's dam was a thoroughbred named Mentmore, out of a Half-Arab. One of Spot's daughters was Raven, who was by Canvasser, by Confidence. Raven was breed to Cadet and foaled a mare named Jackdaw, and Jackdaw was breed to Recruit 4th., by Cassius which produced Enfield Nipper. Enfield Nipper became the foundation sire of the American Hackney pony.

In the year 1914 a colt named Whitegate Pimple, by Whitegate Swell, by Cassius was imported to Canada by T.A. Cox. Whitegate Pimple was out of Whitegate Queen Victoria, by Whitegate Swell. Most of the ponies bred in the 1920s and 1930s were closely bred to the Cassius lines.
