A Celebration of Atkin Schooners:

The America Junior Design

About two years ago, a partially-completed America Junior was offered in the “Boats for Free” classifieds of Wooden Boat magazine.  I was not the first to call, alas, as I was without a boat at the time, and this would have been a great way to get one.  I went to the library to find something about it, and found these drawings in a collection of designs from Motor Boating magazine, where William Atkin wrote, and designed, for some years.  As part of his write-up for the design, he included a short account of how Atkin & Wheeler got started.  I highly recommend that article if you are interested in all things Atkin.

I have collected these drawings along with the other boats I have considered building.  If I hadn’t found the Florence Oakland I have now, this would have been a prime contender for The Boat to Build.  With space for an inboard, a well-designed cockpit, and That Atkin Look, America Junior is a realizable project for the amateur builder, and a great entry-level schooner.
