Girl Group Chronicles: Honeybees

Hmmm... what do the Cookies, the Cinderellas, Little Eva, and the Honeybees all have in common? The all at one time shared the same producers: Gerry Goffin, Carole King, and Russ Titelman. What’s more, they might all be one in the same.

The Honeybees recorded several sides in the early to mid sixties on a variety of different labels, and although each record was above average, none ever really hit big. "She Don’t Deserve You," b/w "One Wonderful Night," was released on Dimension in early 1964, around the same time as the Cookies "I Never Dreamed," the Cinderellas "Baby Baby (I Still Love You)," and Little Eva’s, "What A Gotta Do To Make You Jealous." None of these songs charted in the Top 100, which it a shame and a wonder, as every one of them were Top 10 candidates.

Lesley Gore had a hit with "She’s A Fool," a song which strongly borrowed its lyrics from "She Don’t Deserve You," but that didn’t help the Honeybees. After a stint on VeeJay records, "No Guy," the group was lost in the shuffle.

It is quite possible that the Cookies recorded the Honeybees most famous single along with the others at the same time, but other groups of Honeybees probably used the name for different labels which had no connection to Goffin and the gang.
