Descendants of Reuben Williams (1760-1802) and Mary Van Tassel (1753-1847)

Second Generation

2. William W. Williams (Reuben ) was born in Dec 1783 in Saint John, Saint John Co., New Brunswick, Canada. He died on 10/18 Nov 1860 in Hodgdon, Aroostook Co., Maine.

William was born in New Brunswick, according to son John's death certificate. William and Mary were married by Rev. Richard Clarke. In the summer of 1813, William and Mary moved to Houlton, Aroostook County, Maine. William built a log cabin on lot #20, at the top of Garrison Hill. They were the 13th family to settle there (and the first family who was not from Mass). He bought land in the Williams College Grant in 1823, 1826, and 1828. Mary bought land in Houlton in 1820 and 1825. William became a member of the First Congregationalist Church of Houlton Plantation on Nov. 1, 1818. Later, he was a part-time minister there and a chaplain for the Masonic Lodge. He appears in the 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 Census of Houlton. About this time, William decided that Houlton had become too crowded, so he and his family moved to Amity. He bought 400 acres of land in South Amity along Calais Road. William and his sons cleared the land on 4 lots and built a log cabin. Some of his sons took over these other lots and built their own houses there. William was a farmer. He is described as: 6 ft. tall, 165 lbs., with brown eyes. His wife Mary was 5 1/2 ft. tall and 125 lbs. In 1850, their property was valued at $1000. (The 1850 Federal Census also lists George Fletcher, age 13, born Woodstock, N.B., living with this family.) Later in life, William and Mary moved to Hodgdon to be near some of their other children. William died at age 78 in Hodgdon, Maine. Mary at age 75 and was buried next to her husband. Her probate record of Jan. 25, 1861 gave $4000 to her son Jared Williams. This was signed by her heirs: M.M. Williams, Bertha P. Jewell, Elizabeth C. Ham, Charles F. Williams, and A.G. Williams.

from, "THE STORY OF HOULTON" by Cora M. Putnam (1958, House of Falmouth, Inc., Portland, Maine)
pg. 27 "William W. Williams, who with his family joined the Houlton group in 1812, was the first emigrant from the Province ..."
pg. 44 (Houlton during War of 1812) "The British soldiers paid no attention to the boundary (Maine-Canadian border), and often rushed into the settlement in pursuit of these deserters. One such party became separated in the woods near the farm of William W. Williams, who in 1812 had come to Houlton from New Brunswick to live. This party of soldiers were signaling to each other by discharging their guns, and Williams went out to investigate. Creeping up on the sergeant who had just fired his musket, Williams took him prisoner, and after marching him across the line into New Brunswick, made him promise that he would never recross the boundary of Maine again for hostile purposes. Then he restored the sergeant's gun and dismissed him as a "prisoner on parole" ..."
pg. 51 Report of Joseph Treat to Gov. William King (first Govenor of Maine): "While in this section (Houlton; Nov. 1820) I made a survey of the land and took a census of the inhabitants of the settlement and that of New Limerick, and a a result the following heads of families are listed below, with the number in each family: ...; Williams W. Williams with 11 in family; Joseph Houlton, 6 in family, ...; Ebenezer Warner, 6 in family; ...; Amos Putnam, 3 in family; ...; making a total of 114 souls." At this time, there were 16 families in Houlton. New Limerick had 5 families with 27 inhabitants.
