Activities

Research Wheel

1)  Have your students conduct research on polar bears using library and internet resources.

 2)  Have them write out information that they find out about the polar bear such as it's diet, habitat, characteristics, appearance and any other interesting facts they might find out about them.

3)  Using manila paper  or other sturdy paper, cut out two circles with a circumference of about 30 cm.

 4)  Divide one circle into 4 equal parts using a pencil.  On the other circle, cut out one piece that is equal to one of these parts, so that when you put them together, you will have a "window".

5)  On the circle that is divided into four, write column headings for each separate part and have the children transfer their information under the appropriate heading.

6)  Placing the circle with the window on top, put the two circles together with a brass fastner, so that you are able to turn the wheel and look at one window at a time.

7)  Have the child write/draw the animal on the front.

Diorama

1)  Using a shoe box, place bottom of the box in the lid (as in the picture to the left).  You might want to glue it down so that the base is sturdy.

2)  Have the children paint the habitat background for their animal.  Let the box dry overnight.

3)  Using plasticine, the children can make their animals, other animals, lakes etc.  Try to use a variety of materials - egg cartons, twigs, rocks, pipe cleaners - the possiblities are endless!
