About Dudhwa National Park

Dudhwa National Park in India is one of the best preserved tiger reserve situated at India and Nepal Border in Uttar Pradesh. This tiger reserve is since 1879 but it became a national park in the year 1977 and adopted the Project Tiger in 1988. Although the major attraction of Dudhwa National Park is Tigers but one can also enjoy watching other animals there like Leopards, Hispid Hares, Swamp Deer (Barasingha) and Rhinos.

Major portion of Dudhwa National Park is covered by forests of Bardia on the Nepal side. One can see huge Sal trees, tall termite mounds and large open grasslands. The best part of this national park is its lakes which provide the excellent opportunities for observing Swamp Deer and birds from very near.

Dudhwa Wildlife National Park also offers safaris to enjoy your trip. One can hire jeeps or mini buses to move inside the park. Not only jeep safari but you can also enjoy elephant safari in Dudhwa. During elephant safari, you don't have any need to hire guide as the elephant driver(mahouts) knows total information about the park. He will drive and guide you there.

If you want more excursion then en route to Dudhwa National Park, visit a unique Frog Temple at Oyal. This is the only one of its kind of temple in India. This temple was built by former Maharajas of the Oyal state and temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is known as Frog temple because it is situated on a huge frog shaped stone. There is one more famous place to visit, known as Surat Bhawan Palace. Major attractions of this palace are its lush lawns, fountains, a swimming pool and interesting architecture.

Wildlife in Dudhwa National Park

Dudhwa National Park has around 37 species of mammals and 16 species of reptiles. Recently, the hispid hare has also been spotted in the area. Around 95 tigers and 4 leopards are in this national park. In the year 1984, rhinoceros rehabilitation project was started here. This national park is the home for rhinoceros since 150 years.

Dudhwa national park is very famous among the local as well as foriegn tourists. This park is not only famous for its wildlife animals but also for its bird species. Around 400 species of migratory birds come here every year which are the major attraction of tourists. Some of the famous birds found here are Swamp Partridge, Great Slaty Woodpecker, Bengal Florican, painted storks, sarus cranes, owls, barbets, woodpeckers, minivets and many more. Most of the birds are found near and around Dudhwa’s lakes- especially Banke Tal.

Best Time to Visit Dudhwa National Park

The ideal time to visit the Dudhwa National Park is between the months of November to May. Remember that the park remains closed from July to October.

How to Get there

Air: The nearest airport from Dudhwa National Park is Lucknow around 245 km. Numerous flights are operated from here by Indian Airlines for major cities across the country. Outside India, Nepal at 35 kms is the nearest airport.
Rail: The nearest railheads are Dudhwa (4 kms), Palia (10 kms) and Mailani (37 kms). But it is better to go to Lucknow railway station as here you can get trains for almost all major cities.
Road: It is very easy to travel by bus from Dudhwa National Park. This place is well connected by bus to Palia, Lakhimpur Kheri, Shahjahanpur, Bareilly and Delhi. Buses are frequent between Palia and Dudhwa. Private as well as government buses are available for the journey. One can also hire private auto and taxis.
