About Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park is situated in Madhya Pradesh and the home to the famous White Tigers of Rewa. White Tiger is a rare animal to watch which is possible in Bandhavgarh National Park. The park was a former hunting reserve of the royal family of Rewa. Bandhavgarh National Park was declared a national park in 1968. This place is steep and rocky and contains flat tops and level grasslands in the valleys below. Several fine Sal trees and stretches of bamboo are found in the forest of this national park.

In all over India, Bandhavgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is known for having one of the densest populations of Tigers. Other wild animals like Nilgai, Chital, Chinkara, Gaur, Sloth Bears and Wild Boar are also found here along with some 253 species of birds. Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the best places for nature lovers to witness the Tiger in action.

There are several options to visit this park in which safari is the best option. There are two types of safaris provided to the visitors and they are Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari. Jeep safaris are undertaken during the early morning hours till evening. Forest department guide is essential for Jeep Safari with you and mahout is essential during elephant safari to guide you. The best time for both safaris is early morning and in the evening.

Some of the major attractions near Bandhavgarh National Park which attract visitors very much are Archaeological Remains of the Kalchuri period. Bandhavgarh Fort is also a prime attraction near this park which is believed to be over 2000 years old. The Fort has a large number of caves belonging to the pre-historic period. One more attraction near Bandhavgarh National Park is Baghela Museum. This museum houses the private collection of the maharajah of Rewa and a unique collection of military weapons.

Wildlife in Bandhavgarh National Park

Basically Bandhavgarh National Park is famous for its rare species of White Tigers but there are lots more animals like Nilgai, Chausingha, Chital, Chinkara, Wild boar, fox and jackal. Around 253 species of birds are also found in the park including migratory birds. These migratory birds arrive in winter in which some of the famous bird species are steppe eagle and various water birds. While roaming on the terrace of the Bandhavgarh Fort one can experience breathtaking bird's-eye view of the Park. There are some more avian species found in Bandhavgarh National Park and which are Peacock, Paradise fly catchers, Jungle Fowl, Golden and Black headed Orioles, Yellow Ioras, Red-vented Bulbuls, Blue Jays, Purple Sunbirds, Green Barbets and Mynahs.

Best Time to Visit Bandhavgarh National Park

The ideal time to visit the Bandhavgarh National Park is between the months of November to March and May to June. This park remains closed between July and October.

How to Get there

Air: The nearest well connected airport is Khajuraho. Daily flights are available Delhi to Khajuraho.
Rail: The nearest railhead is Umaria located on the Katni-Bilaspur.
Road: Bandhavgarh National Park is well connected by bus services. Nearest bus terminals are Rewa, Satna, Katni and Umaria. Hiring cars from Katni, Umaria, Satna or Bilaspur is also an option for visitors.
