Wildlife Information in India

India is well known for its endangered and rare wildlife in all over the world. Indian wildlife and vegetation is unique in its richness and diversity. India comparing to other countries has rare species in its jungles, wildlife national parks and sanctuaries. India's wildlife is both rich and varied. A major part of Indian land is covered with forests. A survey says that 4% of Indian land is covered with forests. India contains approximately 92 wildlife national parks and 480 wildlife sanctuaries. Here in this country, you may also find those species which are rare to find in any other part of the world.

India is most popularly known for its Tigers. Wildlife of India is for nature lovers. India also has 23 tiger reserves established by the Government of India in an attempt to conserve this vital resource. In India one can find almost 350 mammal species, birds species nearly 2200 forms and more than 32,000 species of insects. Numerous species of fish, amphibians and reptiles are also find in different parts of India. India is a perfect place for wildlife enthusiast who wants to see wild animals in their natural habitat.

India's national parks and wildlife sanctuaries are vital to the conservation of endangered species, such as Bengal tiger, the Asiatic Elephant, Lion, the Snow Leopard and Siberian Crane. Corbett National Park is India's first national park which is situated in Uttaranchal which supports a great variety of mammals. The best mean of exploring these wildlife destinations is on elephant back as well as by jeeps. If someone wants to know the nature and its habitats from near then he must live in a forest for a few days. Day is not enough to explore the real wildlife. If you want to see the real wildlife then you must spend some time for night safaris to feel true majesty of the wild.

Wildlife parks and sanctuaries of India are very famous in all over the world as these are known for their safaris and wildlife animals. These parks and sanctuaries are those places in which animals are not captured in cages or in a limited area. Here one can see animals wandering free here and there. These are the moderate places for wild animals. Explore these places and know wildlife of India from near. These parks and sanctuaries of India are the best mean for capturing wildlife information of India.

Forest and Biodiversity

Tropical forests including India's have a recorded cover of 14% of the earth's land surface (8 million sq-kms) and are exceptional in the wealth of their biodiversity. Biodiversity signifies the variety and variability of all animals, plants and micro-organisms on earth which are variously estimated to be between 5 and 30 million living species, of which about 1.4 million have been, described (Wilson, 1988). The rapid loss and dwindling biodiversity has attracted national and international concern and attention. Half of all vertebrates, 60% of the known plant species, and possibly 90% of the world's total species are found in tropical forests.

Tropical Moist Forest

The greatest diversity of species is found in Tropical Moist Forest. Although covering only 5-7% of the land surface, these extremely rich but fragile habitats contain more than half the species in the entire world's living organisms. Large areas of tropical moist forest are concentrated in a small number of countries. By far the largest area remaining in a single country is in Brazil. Indonesia and Cameroon contain approximately on third and on half of the remaining closed forest is in Asia and Africa respectively.

Tropical Dry Forests

Much larger areas of the tropics are covered with forests, which experience a dry season and have a more open canopy. These tropical dry forests are considerably less important than tropical moist forest in terms of biodiversity. However, although they are less rich in species diversity compared to tropical moist forest, they carry genetic resources of populations with potentially valuable and capable of adapting and withstanding environmental stress. These forests have already been severely depleted being relatively accessible and easy t clear for agriculture and other non forestry purposes. Two thirds of the remaining dry forests are in Africa, approximately on-third in Latin America, and the rest in the Asia-Pacific regions.

Wildlife Conservation in India

Creation of series of National Parks, Sanctuaries aim at wildlife conservation. Mere constitution alone may not yield the desired result and achieve the expected goals unless they are backed by habitat improvement measures, breeding activities, special projects to save the endangered species from extinction, regulatory mechanisms by way of Acts and Rules, national and international attention and understanding, special management practices and funding.
