Castor Mini Rex Castor Mini Rex is one of the first varieties presented in the breed in 1988. It is also considered the trademark color of the breed, and is usually the most common color seen at shows. Its is to be a rich mohogany or chestnut brown in overall appearence, but when you blow into the fur, there should be distinct bands of color. Rich slate blue at the base, next a bright orange intermediate band, followed by a light tipping of black. In correct Castor color, the belly is to be a creamy tan or white with an undercolor matching the slate undercolor on the back. Being an agouti pattern, it also has body markings that allow it to be recognised as an agouti at birth. These markings are a light belly, inside front and hind legs, under chin, eye circles, as well as white inside the ears, and under the tail. Although you may have a kit or adult that in surface color resembles a Castor, it MUST have the other markings to be one! Any solid coloring on the belly, or coloring matching the surface, most likely is a gold tipped steel, a presently unrecognized color. Castors can come in as many shades as you can imagine, from a dark black flecked tan, to so dark on the surface that the color almost appears black. I hope these images help to clarify the coloring called Castor. |
