And a modest proposal and analysis about "The Low-Mileage Third Car" I drive 4 miles some days... the trip to work is 2 miles and the trip back from work is 2 miles. I need a third car. 1. My wife has her car 2. I have a gasoline car for one trip a weekwhen I drive 50 miles in one direction 3. ...and the third car is perfect for short trips.... and it could be electric. The additional insurance cost is quite low, just $200 a year The tag is $56 The fuel cost is about 5 cents a mile... Compare that to a 20 mpg car at $3/gallon, that's 300/20 miles = 15 cents per mile... ouch... Here's the proposal: Dear Governor, how about waiving the registration cost for electric cars? Since there is a 10 cents per mile difference, I need to drive $256/10 cent = 2600 miles to save enough in reduced fuel cost to pay off the cost of the extra tag and insurance. At 20 miles per day, I break even after 120 days or about 3.5 months. Still, why not give the EV owner a reduced price on the registration cost? |
