Studies have shown that people who use visualization as part of their practice do better than those who don't use visualization. 

A study of a group of random subjects with approximately the same basket ball ability was conducted to see if visualization would make a difference in their ability to shoot free throws.  The entire group shot free throws, and then they were seperated into three groups all with the same abilities.  The first group was told to practice for an hour every day for two weeks.  The second group was told not to do any practicing, and to just return in two weeks.  The third group was told to visualize shooting free throws every day for an hour.  At the end of two weeks it was discovered that the group that used visualization improved almost as much as the group that practiced, and the group that did nothing did not improve at all. 
Professional athletes use visualization all the time.  The next time you watch an olympic compition, and they show the athlete that is about to perform, watch what the athlete is doing.  You will most likely see them with there eyes closed visualizing their routine.
Hypnosis is not a substitute for practice, however, it is a good adjuct.  Hypnosis can help by improving your ability to recreate past performance.  If you have bowled a strike in the past then you know you possess the ability to do it.  The trick is to recreate the same body movements that allowed you to make the strike the first time.  The body movements you used to make the first strike are stored in your subconscious.  If you can access that resource again then you should be able to get the same results.  This is where hypnosis can help.  Hypnosis can aid you with tapping into your subconscious mind, and using it to help increase your athletic performance by helping you to recreate past performances.
