LTC Samuel M Hogan
3rd Battalion 33rd Armored Regiment 3rd Armored Division

1941-1945
October 15, 1944, Germany.  On this day LTC Sam Hogan was awarded the Silver Star for actions in France.  Here is a description of the action:

The BN was not heavily engaged in the hedgerow fighting in Normandy and went through the hole opened by the Infantry at St Lo.  The Division mission was to widen and strengthen the left shoulder of the breakthrough out of Normandy.  The BN was ordered to take and hold until relieved by the Infantry units a french farm consisting of a number of stone buildings.  This was done against light opposition.  Before the Infantry came up to relieve the BN the Germans launched what proved to be a probing attack leading up to the attempted breakthrough to Avranches on the coast to cut off Patton's forces running loose in Brittany.  The probe consisted of 7 to 8 German tanks which were burned by the BN tanks.

Tankers commented on what a nice change it was to have the German tanks moving into their tanks in the selected and prepared positions instead of vice versa.  The BN was subjected to considerable artillery fire and 17 German dive bombers attacked it.  It held the position until relieving Infantry came up.
