Canadian Libraries
What you can find there!

Some Canadian Public Libraries carry:

  • local census indexes in books
  • local census on microfilm
  • local newspapers on microfilm
  • biographical records in books or on microfilm
  • marriage registers
  • local family histories
  • local area history books
  • genealogy handbooks - tells of existing sources and their locations

Most public libraries can order microfilm, microfiche, or books through inter-library loan, from other libraries, provincial archives or national archives and occassionally from other countries.

In most areas there are small public libraries with access to resources located in the area's main public library. In both Essex and Kent Counties the town libraries have access to the city libraries. In Essex County we can borrow resources from the Windsor Library and in Kent you can borrow the resources from the Chatham Library, both of these have Genealogy Societies located in them.

The Archives of Canada and the Ontario Archives, both have websites with catalogues of their holdings that are available through inter-library loan. The archives allow you to borrow up to 6 reels of microfilm at a time for a period of six weeks, but you can order more once your library returns them.
