New Directory and Neighborhood Watch Recertification

The new WF Directory has been printed and will be distributed by your Neighborhood Watch Block Captains. The neighborhood blocks have been redrawn to make our program more effective. At the same time the Block Captain's will be gathering signatures for the re-certification of our Neighborhood Watch program.  This is something that must be done every two years.  Our goal is to complete the re-certification by January 15th, 2004

Check here for Directory Updates.

Status of DeKalb BOC Meeting, Monday, November 25th 2002

The DeKalb Board of Commissioners met Monday, November 25, 2002 at 7:00 at the Maloof Center Auditorium at 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur. Due to the overwhelming support from phone calls, e-mails and good numbers attending the commission meeting from the surrounding neighborhoods, Focus development asked for a 60 day deferral to change their proposal from apartments to townhomes. Commissioner's Boyer and Walker supported the deferral.  The next Board of Commissioner's meeting for this item will be late January.

DeKalb Board of Commissioner's Meeting, Monday, November 25th 2002

The DeKalb Board of Commissioners meeting is Monday, November 25, 2002 at 7:00 at the Maloof Center Auditorium at 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur.  While it is expected that Focus Development will ask for a deferral, this cannot be taken for granted. The Board's vote is the only one that matters in this case.  Spring Meadow's subdivision has asked for our support two ways.  One, attend the meeting Monday evening, or two contact Commissioner's Elaine Boyer and Lou Walker and ask them to deny the Focus Development request to develop 210 apartments on the Tucker Racquet and Fitness property on Norcross-Tucker Road,   that we would prefer to see an owner occupied development or maintain the current zoning on the property.  A high density development is an inappropriate transition from the retail center to the residential developments that surround the TRFC property. You may contact Elaine Boyer at (404) 371-2844 or at clmitche@co.dekalb.ga.us  . You may reach Lou Walker at (404) 371-3053 or louwalker@co.dekalb.ga.us . Please contact both commissioners and ask them to deny the request by Focus Development if you are unable to make the Monday meeting.

November 6, 2002

The attorney asked for a deferral for the TRFC Re-zoning request , Monday, November 4th 2002.  They will be back in January with their request before the Planning Commission.  Meanwhile they have scheduled a meeting with the area residents to explain the Focus Development proposal.  The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 12th at 7:00 PM at the Tucker High School Cafeteria.  Please attend if you can.

TRFC Re-zoning meeting, Monday, November 4th 2002

Spring Meadows Subdivision has asked for our support to defeat the re-zoning of Tucker Racquet and Fitness Club from O&I to High Density for 240 apartments. We can support them by attending the Planning Commission meeting Monday night November 4th at 7:00 at the Maloof Center Auditorium at 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur.  If you cannot attend please call the Planning Office at 404-371-2886 and tell them that you would support the existing O& I or an owner occupied plan, but not apartments!

Adding more traffic, more overcrowding in our schools, and safety concerns will affect our property values, our taxes and our quality of life.

July 1, 2002

A Service/Handyman category has been added to the 'Usefull Numbers' page.  All of the service providers listed have completed work for or know someone in our neighborhood.  Ask them for a  reference or  referral.

Tucker Racquet has a request for a zoning change from O & I  to  RM HD for Apartments.  The first zoning hearing is July 10th at 7:00 pm at the Maloof Center in Decatur.  The Board hearing will be July 24th at 7:00 pm at the Maloof Center in Decatur.  If you can't attend, let Commissioner Boyer know your position on this issue.

The Homeowner Association has petitioned the County to do a traffic study for a traffic light at the intersection of Gladney Drive and Chamblee-Tucker Road. This will take 4 to 6 weeks to schedule and complete.

June 13, 2002

The New Tucker Police Precinct is now open. New phone number is 678-973-5301. Sharon Drocon, the Neighborhood Watch co-ordinator's new phone number is 678-973-5339.

The county has raised property taxes by raising the millage for operating expenses by 0.57 mill, despite having the SPLOST tax approved for another 5 years. CEO Jones said "I cut taxes", referring to his original request of raising the property tax mill rate to 0.67.  When you get your next property tax statement, you be the judge!   Now  property owners are paying the additional sales tax of one percent plus the property tax! Wembley Forest homeowners can expect to pay between $100.00 and $200.00 additional dollars in property tax.

March 5, 2002

Alert!  One of our neighbors on Wembley Forest Way reported the following incident from this past Sunday night/Monday morning:

Last night (Sun., 3-3) or early this morning (Mon., 3-4) someone came into our carport and opened doors on all three of our cars.  They also flipped the sun-visors down and opened the glove compartments.  Nothing appeared taken and we guess that they were looking for keys to the cars.

Please be alert, report anything suspicious and keep your car doors locked!

February 17, 2002

Be sure to vote on March 19th. If you have children, or if you don't have children you will want to be an educated voter when it comes to the SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax).  The SPLOST will expedite the completion of the Tucker Middle School and alleviate overcrowding at Henderson Middle School, and Evansdale . What it won't do is cost you more. If it passes on March 19th you will not notice an increase. This will simply be an extension of the sales tax for education that has been in place since 1997. What happens without an extension? Failure to approve the SPLOST for education will result in an increased number of trailers. Schools will continue to be overcrowded.  Double sessions would become a major consideration without funds to build new schools.  The school board could increase property taxes to the legal limit of 25 mils or offer voters a bond referendum which, if approved, would raise property taxes for approximately 20 years to meet the school system's physical needs.  Good schools help property values. What were the benefits of the SPLOST since 1997?  DeKalb realized 10 new schools 21 new additions, 31 completed multi-purpose buildings with 48 under construction, renovations at 68 schools, technology upgrades, and security upgrades.   What  will the benefits of the SPLOST II be?  There will be 10 more new schools (3 high schools, 5 middle schools, 2 elementary schools) , more additions, land acquisitions for 5 schools, and more improvements for technology upgrades, and security upgrades. Roofing for 60 schools, renovations- refurbishing rooms from floor to ceiling, and new classroom additions.  For more information, contact District 4,  DeKalb County Board of Education member:  Ms. Bebe Joyner at (404) 297-1205.  Your vote counts!

November 27, 2001

The QucikTrip Corp asked the Dekalb County Board of Commissioners to Defer their request for rezoning Randie's for a QucikTrip without prejudice. This means they can come back in the next cycle, sometime in the March timeframe.

 November 5, 2001

The Planning Commission Zoning Meeting voted to deny the request for QuickTrip to build a 24 hour convenience store on the site of Randie's Service Center. The lack of a 50 foot buffer  where the retail and residential properties came together seemed to be the primary reason for the defeat. The 50 foot buffer was a requirement for the type of zoning change being requested. QuickTrip only proposed a 20 foot buffer.  Other neighborhood opposition was clearly against a 24 hour convenience store!

November 1, 2001

A flyer circulated in our neighborhood incorrectly noted that QuickTrip Corporation is planning to build a 24 hour convenience store and gas station at the corner of Chamblee-Tucker Road and Pleasantdale. The location is the intersection of Norcross-Tucker Road and Chamblee-Tucker Roads. Specifically, from the Sterling Used Car lot, Randies Service Center, and the empty lot next to Randies Service Center.

If you have a position for or against this re-zoning, please participate in the re-zoning process. I personally think this would make traffic congestion at this intersection worse during rush hours, and we have a new Kroger store at Embry Village that is already open 24 hours. There is no need for a 24 hour convenience store.

Please  let your voice be heard by the DeKalb Planning Commission about this 24-hour convenience store. If you cannot attend the meeting  please call 404-371-2886 and voice your opinion.
