Life of Bryan

chapter seventeen

Sarah and Sherry booked into a gorgeous, little guest-house just outside Sheffield. It was old and reminded Sarah instantly of Bryan's house back in Dublin. There were only 4 rooms in the guest house and apart from Sarah and Sherry, there were only two other guests staying at the same time.

The guest-house was run by a sweet, little old lady with a strong Yorkshire accent. She was friendly and helpful and after the girls had told her of Sarah's plans, though Sherry wasn't completely sure what Sarah's plans were, she immediately retrieved some books from her little, personal library to help them on their way. She owned some extremely old books with plans and layouts of buildings in the area, which had long since been demolished.

It didn't take Sarah long to find 'Windslow House' and it's location and to hers and Sherry's amazement the little, old lady without muttering a word took the book on their discovering it and disappeared into a back room. "Where's she gone?" asked Sherry, completely baffled. Sarah shrugged as they waited for her return.

After a few moments the lady emerged from the back room with a thin pile of papers. "I scanned them onto my computer so you could get a printout to take wi' you when you go out. There's no use you trying to drag this big book along wi' you, it's too heavy. "She told them.

"You have a computer?" Sarah said smiling as she took the papers from the old lady. Everything around them seemed so old, they couldn't believe this old lady who seemed like she had just stepped out of the past was at all high tech in any way.

"Me grandson giv' it me" the old lady told them, "I don't use it much except for cases like this. There's normally nowt to do on it but write and I don't like to write much these days, no one to write to. I used to write loads when I were a lass, very creative me..."

She trailed off into a long story about her school days as Sarah and Sherry listened inattentively, Sarah holding the papers close to her chest.

Very early the next day Sarah and Sherry packed their rucksacks with food and drink and most importantly the papers, their lovely, old lady friend had given them. Sarah had bought a map of Sheffield and as they sat on the bus that drove them into the city they studied it closely.

Within a couple of hours they'd located the mansion and had found the route that would take them there. There was a fair amount of walking involved but Sarah and Sherry were no strangers to walking long distances.

They had a tendency to getting terribly lost and often had to walk around quite a bit to find their way home again. However this time they were extra cautious, neither wanting to be responsible for wasting a whole day walking around the wilds of Yorkshire.

Because of their long walk they had a lot of time to chat on the way. Sarah finally told Sherry about the whole story of how she and Bryan came to be. Sherry was dubious and had her doubts but put them aside as her friend seemed so set on what she was saying.

When they finally reached the mansion they were surprised at it's size, it was huge. There were at least 50 rooms in the house and that was only a mere guess at their first glance. "Lets go in" Sarah suggested.

"Are you sure?" Sherry asked her "If what you said is true it might hold a lot of bad memories, it might even be haunted or something!" Sarah sighed "Even after all that's happened even I don't believe in that!" "Well you should!" Sherry told her as they entered the house "My brother saw a ghost once and he swears it made him fly up to the ceiling and..."

They were suddenly interrupted by a deep, gruff, man's voice "What are you doing in here?" Both girls spun around to become face to face with a tall, intimidating man. He towered over them before, to their surprise, smiling.

"You can't just come in here you know!" he told them "You have to pay admittance." "Oh sorry," Sarah replied "I didn't know we had to pay". "It's national trust property you know" he told them, suddenly seeming very friendly "You always have to pay on National Trust property, the desk's over there" he said pointing to a young spectacled girl behind a desk behind the door who Sarah and Sherry hadn't even noticed on entering.

They paid their admittance and, along with about a dozen other people who arrived soon after they did, were taken on a tour of the house.

The man, whose badge said Stephen on it, showed them room after room and Sarah remembered all of them as though she'd been in the house only recently. Stephen told them about the story of the Flemmings family and revealed more than both Bryan and Sarah already knew.

"Rumour has it," Stephen told them "that miss Charlotte had a box with a secret in it. No one to this day knows the secret but it's said that in her suicide note to her family she told them about it and that she had needed to tell her lover and hadn't been able to because of his untimely death. She swore that she and her lover could never be reunited until the box was discovered and she was able to tell her lover what was in it."

Sarah clutched her chest, suddenly she felt a great pain in her heart. "Your alright?" Sherry asked, concerned. "All very melodramatic really" Stephen continued "All a bit of a Romeo and Juliet type story really".

"I know where it is" Sarah whispered to Sherry. "What?" Sherry replied. "The box, I remember where the box is!" Sarah told her friend to Sherry's complete amazement, her memories suddenly flooding back to her.
