Summary: Dancing, spanking, and a song.
She lay there asleep, a small smile playing on her lips..

Jenny Sullivan walked into the room and smiled herself.. she couldn't help but think as sick as gramms was, she always, always, smiled no mater how she felt or how much pain she may be in.. soft sounds of music danced in the room.. gramms had insisted that if she was to go to the hospital, she would definatly not be going without that little black radio she always kept sitting upon the window sill in her kitchen.

Jenny remembered many of times over the years visiting gramms, and always in the same spot was that radio, perched upon that same window sill, always in the kitchen.. a kitchen that never seemed to change, with the ivory curtins and the mahogony table and chairs.. the smells came flooding back to her, the smells of oatmeal cookies and warm hot chocolate.. comforting smells she had always called them, because no matter how bad she felt or how many fights she and her mother had gotten into.. she could retreat to gramms, could retreat to that kitchen and oatmeal cookies and warm hot chocolate, and gramms.. she didn't have to say anything and gramm never pressed her about the events of what happened.. but everything seemed right with the world when she was in that kitchen..

Jenny made her way over to gramms and quietly slid a chair closer to the bedside, it was then that she noticed the black and white picture clutched in the frail, wrinkled, beautiful hand of gramms.. Although she could not see what it was a picture of, she knew it must be something special by the way gramms held it.

She sat and layed a hand gently on gramms. She was a stunningly, beautiful woman..even now.. vivacious and outgoing, always laughing and always loving.. Her hair ever since Jenny could remember had always been long, she remembered seeing pictures of Gramms in her younger years, before her mignight black hair had turned to the silver it was now.

That morning Isabella awoke to a routine that had become so much apart of her life these last few weeks.. Nurses flittering in and out of her room, bringing her breakfast, helping her get bathed and changed for the day.. Although this morning when she awoke, she had shoo'd them all away.. oh sure she had let that sweet little red headed nurse check the level of her sugar, but after that she told them she just wanted to be left alone..

She lay in her bed for the longest time just stareing out the window.. she couldn't see much in the position she was in now.. but she knew that just below the court yard with all its beautiful and precious flowers, waitng for her..but they would stay waiting for now..

Sitting up Isabella reached over to the metal beside table and took out a weatherd and worn cigar box.. it didn't look like much, it was yellow and torn from all the years of use, not particularily a treasure to look at, but it wasn't that outside that mattered..it was what it held that was the greatest treasure of all..

She opened the box and smiled..she began to filter through the pictures that lay within, remembering the days that each and everyone was taken.. she stopped as she came across one particular picture. She smiled, but there was still a hint of sadness in her eyes as she closed them..

"Isabella! Isabella! wait!" Caden Sullivan had seen her storm out of the hall, he had been dancing with Betty McGee and just left her there to her own divices and took off after Isabella.. Catching her by the arm out the back of the hall he pulled her around to face himself.. bad bad mistake.. as she came around so did her open hand and with a resounding slap she made contact to his cheek.. " Caden Sullivan get your hands off me!!" she hissed at him.. he winced a bit , but just stood there and looked at her, his grip on her arm never wavering.

She fought to get free all the while her mouth was going ninety miles a minute..
" How dare you hold me here! you you you big bully!.. I saw you with that that whore!.. the way she had her hands all over you, the way she was looking at you"

Caden had hold of her wrist trying to calm her down.." Bella there was nothing going on, we were just dancing.. calm down and lets talk!"

But she was a woman scorned.. or so she had thought, and that Irish temper of hers had gotten the better of her and she kept fighting.." Caden Sullivan you expect me to believe that!.. I saw her and YOU! YOU! didn't do anything to stop her!".

Caden growled to himself and looked at her.." Bella calm down NOW!.. there was nothing going on, I f you had noticed I was just dancing, I wasn't even reciprocating her advances!, now calm down" his tone was sharpe, but that didn't deter her, because she hadn't heard him as she went on with her little tirade..

"I can't believe you Caden Sullivan I thought you loved me!!" it was just about then, Isabella managed to get a wrist free and another resounding slap echoed into the night. Caden's eyes grew dark as he grabbed that free wrist of her again and looked at her.. she looked at him, she had suprised herself.. not meaning for it to be that hard.. He let go and grabbed her around the waist heaving her over his shoulder and walked a little ways into the brush and forest that surrounded the little hall..all the while she was kicking and screaming.." caden Sullivan you YOU! put me down this instant!.. where are we going!" she yelled pounding on his back.

Caden found the place he was looking for and non to gracefully set Isabella down on her feet.. she looked at him and looked around.." Where are we?!.. Caden Sullivan this is NOT ok, I'm leaving.. goodbye!!" but as she turned to leave Caden grabbed her and flipped her over his lap, pulling up her chiffon dress .." Hey what are you doing!.. you can't do this!.. your not allowed!.. stop.. let me go!!" she screamed as his hand discended upon her panty covered bottom..

" I can and I will" and with that his solid firm smacks kept descending down on her bottom..and Isabella kept kicking and yelling, her bottom went from white to pink to red to crimson in no time at all and only did he stop when the fight had gone out of her and she was laying limpy over his lap sobbing into the grass..

Pulling her up into her lap he craddled her gently and held her close.. soothing her with his words.." Shhhh baby girl its over.. shhhhh I love you little girl"he quipted softly to her.. Her head burried in his chest she cried.." I'm sorry.. sooooo sorry" he pulled her chin up gently and looked into her eyes.." Isabella Charlotte McCallister I love you, no one else.. there is no one else for me, and there never will be anyone else for me" her eyes glissened in the moonlight, the tears still falling as he kissed her long and hard.. Gently laying her back on the dew covered grass they succumbed to the love they had for one another for the first time.. and oh it was wonderful...

They lay for the longest time entangled in one anothers arms as he breathed in her sweet scent, gently kissing her one last time he stood pulling her up with him and the two dressed.. heading back toward the hall hand in hand a smile on both their faces and a warn bottom to boot..

As they neared the hall they could hear the soft sweet sounds of the band, he stopped her and pulled her into his arms kissing her again as they started to dance slowly to the music...

She is watching by the poplars,
Colinette with the sea blue eyes,
She is watching and longing and waiting
Where the long white roadway lies.
And a song that stirs in the silence,
As the wind in the boughs above.
She listens and starts and trembles.
'Tis the first little song of love...
Roses are shining in Picardy,
In the hush of the silvery dew.
Roses are flowering in Picardy,
But there's never a rose like you
And the roses will die with the summertime,
And our paths may be far apart,
But there's one rose that dies not in Picardy
'Tis the rose that I keep in my heart"
And the years fly on forever,
'Til shadows veil their skies,
But he loves to hold her little hands
And look in her sea blue eyes.
And she sees the road by the poplars,
Where they met in the bygone years,
For the first little song of the roses
Is the last little song she hears:
Roses are shining in Picardy,
In the hush of the silvery dew.
Roses are flowering in Picardy,
But there's never a rose like you
And the roses will die with the summertime,
And our hearts may be far apart,
But there's one rose that dies not in Picardy
'Tis the rose that I keep in my heart

As the song ended, Caden Sullivan kneeled down on one knee and took the pretty little box from his uniform jacket and opened it.. The tears started to fall again from Isabella's eyes as she kept looking from him to the ring and back again.. " Bella my sweet Bella, you are my life, you are my heart and I love no other but you for all the days of my life, will you be my wife?" he fairly choked the words out through his own tears..

All Isabella could do for the longest time was jsut nod and cry.. Caden stood up as she threw herself into his arms and finally said the words he wanted to hear.." Oh yes, Yes I will be your wife Caden Sullivan!" he held her tight and swung her around his joy was great, this little spitfire was going to be his forever..they kissed.

There kiss was finally broken when they heard another of the soldiers yelling.." Sullivan!.. Sullivan!.. the bus is here and its not gonna wait.. common.. Sullivan!" he looked at his friend and looked at Isabella ..he kissed her hard one last time as he reluctantly left her.." When I get back Bella we shall be married.. I love you Isabella McCallister, and don't you forget it!!"

Isabella never saw Caden again, delivered to her door a couple months later was a telegram telling her that he had been killed in action.. his plane went down when he was fighting the enemy, he had died gloriously and for his country.. That same day Isabella found out that she was pregnant, carrying his child...

The woman slowly opened her eyes and looked over to her granddaughter and smiled..Jenny took her hand and smiled back.." I love you Jennifer Sullivan, and don't you forget it" with that she closed her eyes just as the sweet sound of the band playing from the radio lulled her back to a place and that man who she had been waiting to go home to...

Jenny leaned over gently kissing the older woman on the cheek.. she wiped at her tears, noticing that picture once again, she picked it up and smiled looking at a younger gramms and her granfather.." I love you to Gramms"

Note: the song Roses of Picardy was written in 1916 by John McCormack and is copywrited..it was a very popular song when WW2 was taking place..
