Does Conjugated Linoleic Acid Help in Weight Loss?

There are many studies showing that conjugated linoleic acid can improve muscle mass and reduce fat in the body. What is conjugated linoleic acid? It is a natural substance found in many of our foods. With no change in eating or exercise habits, when it is taken as a supplement, it does not make you lose weight directly, but it can help you lose fat. For this reason, men who want to lose weight and bodybuild at the same time, often take it. However, it can also be helpful for any person who is overweight and who does not do much exercising. The reason for this is that any increase in muscle will increase the metabolism, which will burn more calories.

In a fashion similar to the way many natural weight loss products work, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) can help you lose weight gradually and over the long term combined with a healthy eating plan. Thus, CLA can help you stop the yoyo dieting pattern where you are repeatedly losing and gaining the same 10, 20 or 50 pounds over and over again. Yoyo dieting is so destructive to you health that it is actually better to stay overweight than to keep on losing and gaining over and over again.

It is widely recognized by most experts –who are not selling anything- that, rather than using a diet where you eat special foods and ban others, the diet that works best in the long term is the non-diet, you eat slightly smaller quantities of a normal healthy diet. Of course, if you are currently living entirely on pizza, chocolate, and french fries, then some changes definitely need to be made. However you can still eat small portions of all of those foods periodically. So, if this sounds like the kind of diet you might like, then CLA can help reinforce your success by increasing your fat loss.

Dr Michael Pariza of University of Wisconsin-Madison reported to the American Chemical Society that CLA "doesn't make a big fat cell get little. What it rather does is keep a little fat cell from getting big."

A number of studies have been conducted on CLA. One study appearing in the Journal of Nutrition reported that, on average, people taking CLA lost six pounds of body fat more than the group taking a placebo. Researchers determined that the proper amount of CLA per day required to be effective was around 3.4 grams. CLA is found naturally in food, particularly in dairy products and meat, but supplements are required for most people to reach the daily effective level.

At Purdue University, in Indiana, another study concluded that CLA improved insulin levels in about two-thirds of diabetics, and slightly decreased their blood glucose level and triglyceride levels. This finding suggests CLA may be helpful toward achieving normal insulin levels. However, if you have diabetes, or other conditions, you should ask you doctor before taking any supplements.

As always, there are no magic weight loss pills. But if you are willing to commit to reducing your body fat permanently, CLA may help you. Remember that its main effect is to convert fat to muscle, which, by itself, will not weigh any less. However, if you do this, your body may look slimmer and feel healthier. Combined with a good weight control eating plan, conjugated linoleic acid can help you progress toward your ideal weight also.
